How to Make an African Wrap Skirt
Embracing the vibrant spirit of Africa, the wrap skirt is a versatile and stylish wardrobe staple that's easy to make at home. This iconic garment is not only a celebration of African culture but also a testament to the power of simple, elegant design. Let's dive into the world of African fashion and learn how to create your own wrap skirt.
Before we begin, gather your materials: a yard of fabric (cotton or wax print is traditional), scissors, measuring tape, pins, a sewing machine, and a needle and thread for hand sewing. Now, let's get started!
Pattern and Measurement
First, we need to determine the size of your skirt. Measure around your waist where you'd like the skirt to sit, then add 1-2 inches for seam allowance. This will be the width of your skirt. For the length, measure from your waist down to where you'd like the skirt to end, then add 2 inches for the hem.
Now, let's create a simple pattern. Fold your fabric in half lengthwise, then measure and mark the width and length you've just calculated. Draw a line from the top corner of your fabric to the bottom corner, creating a right triangle. This will be the pattern for one side of your skirt.
Cutting the Fabric
Carefully cut along the lines you've drawn, ensuring you have two identical pieces of fabric. These will be the front and back of your skirt. If your fabric has a pattern, make sure to cut the pieces so the pattern aligns when the skirt is sewn together.
Next, cut two rectangles for the waistband. The width should be the same as your waist measurement, and the length should be twice the width of your skirt plus 2 inches (for overlap and seam allowance).
Sewing the Skirt
With right sides together, sew the two main pieces of your skirt along the long edges, leaving the top and bottom open. Then, press the seam allowance open.
Try on the skirt to check the fit. If it's too loose, you can gather the top of the skirt by making small pleats or tucks until it fits snugly around your waist. Once you're happy with the fit, sew the top of the skirt closed, leaving an opening for the waistband.
Attaching the Waistband
The waistband is what gives the wrap skirt its signature look. Fold one of the waistband rectangles in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew along the long edge. Turn it right side out and press.
Insert this tube into the opening at the top of your skirt, with the raw edges aligned. Sew it in place, leaving a small opening to turn the skirt right side out. Once you've turned the skirt right side out, press the waistband and top of the skirt, then hand sew the small opening closed.
Finishing Touches
Finally, hem the bottom of your skirt. Fold the raw edge up 1/2 inch, then fold it up again another 1/2 inch, creating a double-fold hem. Sew this in place.
Now, your African wrap skirt is complete! To wear it, simply wrap the skirt around your waist, bringing the two ends together at the front or back, depending on your preference. Tie the ends in a knot or use a safety pin to secure them in place.
Wearing your handmade African wrap skirt is more than just putting on a garment; it's a celebration of culture, craftsmanship, and personal style. Enjoy the process of creating and wearing your unique piece of African-inspired fashion!
