How to Make a Simple Wrap-Around Skirt
Ever wondered how to create a stylish, comfortable wrap-around skirt that's perfect for any occasion? You're in the right place! This simple yet elegant skirt is a wardrobe staple that's easy to make at home. Let's dive into a step-by-step guide to create your own wrap-around skirt, tailored just for you.
Before we begin, gather your materials: a fabric of your choice (around 2.5 to 3 yards, depending on your size and the width of the fabric), scissors, sewing machine, pins, measuring tape, and a flexible ruler or quilter's ruler. Let's start with the basics.
Measuring and Cutting
The first step is to measure and cut your fabric accurately. You'll need two main pieces: one for the front and one for the back.
Measure your waist and hips, then add 1 to 2 inches for seam allowance. Cut your fabric into two rectangles, with the width equal to your hip measurement plus 1.5 to 2 times your waist measurement (for the wrap-around effect), and the height equal to your waist measurement plus 2 inches (for the waistband).
Front Piece
For the front piece, cut a curved line along the top edge to create the waistband. The curve should start and end at the same width as your waist measurement.
For the side seam, cut a straight line from the bottom corner of the rectangle to the top corner, following your hip measurement plus seam allowance.
Back Piece
The back piece is simpler. Cut a straight line along the top edge for the waistband, and another straight line from the bottom corner to the top corner for the side seam.
Now, let's prepare your fabric for sewing.
Preparing the Fabric
Before sewing, press your fabric with an iron to remove any wrinkles and make sewing easier.
Next, fold over the top edge of both pieces by 1 inch, then fold it over again by another inch to create a double-folded waistband. Press this fold with an iron, then pin it in place.
Sewing the Waistband
Sew along the inner edge of the waistband fold on both pieces, using a straight stitch. Leave the side seams open for now.
Once sewn, turn the waistband right side out and press it again. This will create a neat, finished edge for your waistband.
Sewing the Side Seams
Now, sew the side seams of both pieces together, starting from the bottom and working your way up to the waistband. Leave the top of the side seams open to create the wrap-around effect.
Press the seams open to reduce bulk and create a smooth finish.
Finishing Touches
Try on your skirt to determine where you want the wrap to overlap. Mark this point with a pin.
Sew a few inches below the pin to create a small tab that will hold the skirt closed. You can also add a button or a hook-and-eye closure for extra security.
Finally, hem the bottom edge of your skirt by folding it up by 1 inch, then folding it over again by another inch. Sew along the inner edge of the hem to create a neat finish.
Now, step into your newly created wrap-around skirt, and enjoy the comfort and style of a garment tailored just for you. Happy sewing!
