How to Build a Corner Bench with Storage
Transforming an underutilized corner of your home into a functional and stylish space is an achievable DIY project. Building a corner bench with storage not only adds seating and organization but also enhances the aesthetics of your room. Let's dive into a step-by-step guide on how to create this multifunctional piece of furniture.
Before you start, gather your materials and tools. You'll need plywood, 2x4 lumber, screws, wood glue, sandpaper, paint or stain, and basic power tools like a circular saw, drill, and screwdriver. Don't forget to measure your space to ensure your bench fits perfectly in the corner.
Design and Planning
Start by deciding on the dimensions and design of your corner bench. Consider the size of your corner, the amount of storage you need, and the style that complements your room. Sketch out your design or use online tools to create a blueprint.
For this guide, let's assume a simple L-shaped bench with open shelving for storage. The bench will be 48" wide, 18" deep, and 18" tall, with a 90-degree angle at the corner.
Cutting the Pieces
Using your design as a reference, cut the following pieces from your plywood and 2x4 lumber:
- 2x4s: 4 pieces at 48" for the bench's outer frame, 2 pieces at 18" for the corner support, and 4 pieces at 16" for the shelf supports.
- Plywood: 1 piece at 48" x 18" for the seat, 1 piece at 48" x 16" for the backrest, and 2 pieces at 16" x 18" for the sides.
Assembling the Frame
Begin by attaching the 2x4s to form the L-shaped frame of the bench. Use wood glue and screws to secure the pieces together at the 90-degree angle. Ensure the frame is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner.
Next, attach the 16" 2x4s to the inside of the frame to create the shelf supports. Space them evenly apart to provide stability for the shelf.
Adding the Seat and Backrest
Now that the frame is complete, it's time to attach the seat and backrest. These will be made from the plywood pieces you cut earlier.
Start by attaching the seat to the top of the frame. Use wood glue and screws to secure it in place. Then, attach the backrest to the inside of the frame, ensuring it's flush with the top of the seat.
Creating the Sides
Cut the 16" x 18" plywood pieces to create the sides of the bench. These will be attached to the outer edges of the frame to give the bench a finished look.
Attach the sides using wood glue and screws. Make sure they're flush with the top of the seat and the backrest.
Building the Shelf
Cut a piece of plywood to fit the inside dimensions of the bench frame to create the shelf. This will rest on the 2x4 shelf supports you installed earlier.
Once the shelf is cut, paint or stain your bench to match your room's decor. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Finishing Touches
Now that the bench is painted or stained, it's time to add the final touches. Sand any rough edges and wipe away any dust with a damp cloth.
If desired, you can add cushions or pillows to the seat and backrest for added comfort. You can also install hardware like handles or knobs to make the shelf easier to access.
Your corner bench with storage is now complete and ready to transform your space into a functional and stylish haven. Enjoy the new addition to your home and the extra seating and organization it provides. Happy building!
