How to Build a Deck Bench with Backrest
Transform your outdoor space into a cozy, inviting haven with a DIY deck bench featuring a backrest. This addition not only provides extra seating but also elevates your deck's aesthetic appeal. Let's dive into a step-by-step guide on how to build this functional and stylish piece of furniture.
Before we begin, ensure you have the right tools and materials. You'll need a circular saw, drill, tape measure, level, safety glasses, and gloves. For materials, you'll require pressure-treated lumber, screws, and outdoor wood glue. Let's get started!
Design and Planning
First, decide on the size and style of your bench. A standard bench is about 6 feet long and 18 inches deep, but you can adjust these measurements to fit your space. Sketch out your design, including the backrest, which should be around 16 inches tall for comfort and support.
Once you've finalized your design, create a detailed cut list. This will ensure you have all the necessary pieces and make the building process smoother. Here's a basic cut list for a 6-foot bench with a backrest:
- 4 - 2x6 @ 6' (bench supports)
- 2 - 2x4 @ 6' (bench legs)
- 2 - 2x4 @ 18" (bench aprons)
- 2 - 2x4 @ 16" (backrest supports)
- 1 - 2x4 @ 6' (backrest slat)
Building the Bench Frame
Begin by constructing the bench frame. Cut your 2x6 boards to 6 feet each. These will serve as the bench supports. Use outdoor wood glue and screws to attach two of these boards together, creating a U-shape. Ensure the opening of the U is at the top for the backrest.
Next, cut your 2x4 boards to 18 inches each. These will be the bench aprons. Attach these to the inside of the U-shape, creating the depth of the bench. Now, your basic bench frame is complete.
Adding the Bench Legs
Cut your remaining 2x4 boards to 16 inches each. These will be the bench legs. Attach one leg to each corner of the bench frame, ensuring the frame is level and square. You can use a combination of screws and outdoor wood glue for added strength.
To ensure stability, you can add supports or brackets to the legs. This will prevent the bench from wobbling or tipping over. Once the legs are secure, your bench base is complete.
Constructing the Backrest
Now that your bench base is complete, it's time to build the backrest. Cut your remaining 2x4 boards to 16 inches each. These will be the backrest supports. Attach these to the back of the bench frame, creating a rectangle. Ensure the backrest is level and plumb.
Cut your final 2x4 board to 6 feet. This will be the backrest slat. Attach this board to the top of the backrest supports, creating the backrest. You can add additional slats for extra support if desired.
Finishing Touches
Once your bench is fully constructed, it's time to add the finishing touches. Sand any rough edges and apply a sealant to protect your bench from the elements. You can also stain or paint your bench to match your outdoor decor.
Allow the sealant to dry completely before using your bench. This will ensure its longevity and protect it from moisture and pests.
Enjoy your new deck bench with backrest! This addition will not only provide extra seating but also enhance your outdoor living space. Happy building!
