The woodpecker stair and shelf gauge, a versatile tool in the carpenter's arsenal, is an essential device for ensuring precision and accuracy in woodworking projects. This ingenious tool combines the functionality of a stair gauge and a shelf gauge into one, making it an invaluable asset for both professional woodworkers and DIY enthusiasts alike.
In the realm of woodworking, precision is paramount. A slight error in measurement can lead to a poorly fitting joint, an off-kilter staircase, or a wonky bookshelf. The woodpecker stair and shelf gauge is designed to mitigate these risks, offering a reliable and efficient means of measuring and marking wood for cutting.
Understanding the Woodpecker Stair and Shelf Gauge
The woodpecker stair and shelf gauge is a compact, L-shaped tool with two adjustable arms. The longer arm, typically referred to as the 'stair' arm, is used for measuring the rise and run of stairs. The shorter arm, or 'shelf' arm, is used for measuring the depth and width of shelves.

Woodpeckers Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge l RedTOOL WOODSHOP583K views · 18K reactions | Woodpeckers Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge instantly creates a template for any captured panel, compensating for angel error on the ends and giving you perfect length without measuring. The tool starts with two adjustable bevel ends. They swing out to match the angle of the adjacent wall. The versatility of this tool comes from how the ends join the beam. By using our familiar Dual-Purpose Track and our proven track connectors, you can add beam sections as needed. You can use the same tool to make templates for shelves up to 64” and as short as 17”. One end has a sliding connector (you can put it on whichever end you prefer). This lets you adjust the length of the gauge right into the opening for the shelf or stair tread. Slide the beam out until both ends are against the walls, adjust the two ends to match the wall angle, lock it up and you have your perfect instant template. This tool really shines on the next step... transferring the template to your stock. While other commercial jigs and all homemade designs expect you to align the jig to the edge of your stock by feel, our Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge has two stops that flip over to give you a perfect reference for the edge. Now, simply mark your ends and make your cuts. The shelf, tread or riser will drop right in perfectly. The Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge comes complete with (4) 12” sections of beam, (1) 6” section of beam, two adjustable bevel ends, two edge flip-stops and all the necessary connecting bars and knobs. At its core, this tool is a combination of a stair gauge and a shelf gauge. A stair gauge is used to measure the rise and run of stairs, while a shelf gauge is used to measure the depth and width of shelves. By combining these two functions into one tool, the woodpecker stair and shelf gauge offers a streamlined, efficient solution for woodworkers.
Measuring Stairs with the Woodpecker Stair and Shelf Gauge
To use the woodpecker stair and shelf gauge to measure stairs, the user extends the 'stair' arm to the desired rise and run measurements. The rise is the vertical distance between two consecutive treads, while the run is the horizontal distance from the nose of one tread to the nose of the next.

Once the measurements are set, the user can use the tool to mark the wood. The gauge's pointed tip allows for precise marking, ensuring that each cut is accurate and true. This process is repeated for each stair, ensuring that the entire staircase is uniform and safe to use.
Measuring Shelves with the Woodpecker Stair and Shelf Gauge
To measure shelves with the woodpecker stair and shelf gauge, the user extends the 'shelf' arm to the desired depth and width measurements. The depth is the distance from the front of the shelf to the wall, while the width is the distance from one side of the shelf to the other.

In this video I used the @woodpeckers_tools Stair Tread and Shelf Gauge to measure the perfect length and angle for my tread. This tool is incredible! Unfortunately it is one of their OneTime Tools, so you will have to wait for them to release this tool again one day if you’d like this one. If you want a stair tread gauge right this moment though, there are similar ones on the market as well. Anyways, after I have the perfect template for my tread, I just had to trace it on my tread and cut it to length with my track saw. Now don’t let this video fool you, it did take some minor tweaking here and there to get them to a final ‘perfect’ fit, but this tool definitely made the process much easier and got me headed in the right direction quickly. For the riser in the video I made it out of 1/4” MDF and used similar methods to cut that piece to fit as well. When I went install these parts for the final time I did make sure to apply some PL Construction Adhesive to eliminate any squeaking in the treads and to just hold everything firmly in place. I’ll post one more video on these tomorrow showing a final reveal of what the whole set of stairs looks like but just wanted to share the process of installing the treads.
