The Rosary, a traditional Catholic prayer, is a series of meditations and prayers centered around the life of Jesus and Mary. It’s a powerful tool for contemplation and reflection, and it’s widely practiced by Catholics worldwide. If you’re new to the Rosary or looking to deepen your understanding, knowing the English words can be a great starting point.
Before we dive into the prayers, let’s briefly understand the structure of the Rosary. It consists of five decades, each containing ten Hail Marys, followed by one Our Father and one Glory Be. The five decades are grouped into three sets, each set preceded by one Our Father and one Glory Be. The Rosary also includes an opening prayer and a closing prayer.
The Opening Prayer
The Rosary begins with the Apostles’ Creed, a statement of faith that summarizes the core beliefs of the Catholic Church. It’s a beautiful way to start, reminding us of the foundation of our faith.
The Apostles’ Creed goes like this:
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.
The Our Father
The Our Father, also known as the Lord’s Prayer, is a central prayer in Christian tradition. It’s a model for how we should pray, teaching us to address God as Father and to ask for our daily needs.
The Our Father goes like this:
Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
The Hail Mary
The Hail Mary is a prayer focused on the Blessed Virgin Mary. It’s a beautiful way to honor Mary and to ask for her intercession.
The Hail Mary goes like this:
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
The Glory Be
The Glory Be is a short prayer of praise to the Holy Trinity. It’s a beautiful way to end each decade of the Rosary.
The Glory Be goes like this:
Glory Be
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.
The Mysteries of the Rosary
The Rosary is divided into four sets of mysteries, each set focusing on a different aspect of the life of Jesus and Mary. These mysteries are a powerful way to meditate on the life of Christ and to grow in our faith.
The four sets of mysteries are:
- The Joyful Mysteries
- The Luminous Mysteries
- The Sorrowful Mysteries
- The Glorious Mysteries
Each mystery is a scene from the life of Jesus and Mary, and there are five mysteries in each set. After each decade, you meditate on one of these mysteries.
Now that you know the words to the Rosary in English, you can start your journey of prayer and reflection. The Rosary is a powerful tool for growing in your faith, and it’s a beautiful way to connect with the life of Jesus and Mary. So, why not give it a try today?
