Transform your garden into a serene sanctuary with a simple yet elegant garden bench, handcrafted by you. A DIY garden bench not only adds charm to your outdoor space but also allows you to customize it to your liking. Let’s dive into a step-by-step guide to create your perfect garden bench, ensuring a relaxing spot to enjoy your garden.
Before we begin, gather your materials: pressure-treated lumber, screws, wood glue, sandpaper, paint or stain, and basic tools like a saw, drill, and measuring tape. Safety first, so ensure you’re comfortable using these tools and always wear appropriate protective gear.

Designing Your Bench
First, decide on the size and style of your bench. A classic design is 6 feet long, 18 inches wide, and 18 inches tall, with a backrest. You can adjust these dimensions to suit your space and preferences. Sketch your design or use online tools to visualize your bench.
Consider the materials. Pressure-treated lumber is durable and resistant to rot, making it ideal for outdoor use. Choose from various woods like cedar, redwood, or composite materials for a low-maintenance option.
Gathering Materials and Tools
Based on your design, calculate the amount of lumber needed. For a 6-foot bench with a backrest, you’ll need:
- 4 – 2x4x8 pressure-treated lumber boards for the frame
- 4 – 1x6x8 pressure-treated lumber boards for the seat and backrest
- 2.5-inch and 1.25-inch exterior-rated wood screws
- Exterior wood glue
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Paint or stain (optional)
Cutting the Lumber
Using your saw, cut the lumber according to your design. For a 6-foot bench:

- Cut 2 – 2x4s into 4 pieces, each 18 inches long for the legs and supports
- Cut 2 – 2x4s into 2 pieces, each 6 feet long for the seat frame
- Cut 4 – 1x6s into 2 pieces, each 18 inches long for the backrest
- Cut 4 – 1x6s into 2 pieces, each 6 feet long for the seat
Assembling the Bench
Now that you have all your pieces cut, it’s time to assemble your bench. Start by creating the frame for the seat.
Lay out two of the 6-foot 2x4s parallel to each other, 18 inches apart. Attach them using 2.5-inch screws and wood glue. This will be the base of your bench.
Attaching the Legs
Measure and mark the center of the 18-inch 2x4s. These will be your legs. Attach them to the base using 2.5-inch screws and wood glue, ensuring they’re perpendicular to the base and even with the top.

Next, attach the remaining 18-inch 2x4s to the inside of the legs using 2.5-inch screws and wood glue. These will provide additional support for the seat.
Adding the Seat
Lay the 6-foot 1x6s across the seat frame, spacing them evenly apart. Secure them with 1.25-inch screws and wood glue. Ensure the edges are flush with the frame.
Now, attach the backrest using the 18-inch 1x6s. Position them 12 inches up from the seat, securing them with 1.25-inch screws and wood glue. Ensure they’re even with the top of the legs.
Finishing Touches
Once the bench is assembled, it’s time to make it look polished and protect it from the elements.

Start by sanding the bench using 120-grit sandpaper, then follow up with 220-grit for a smooth finish. Wipe off any dust before applying your paint or stain.
Painting or Staining
Apply your paint or stain according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow it to dry completely between coats. For longevity, consider applying a sealant to protect the wood from moisture and sunlight.
Finally, place your bench in your garden, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. A DIY garden bench not only adds charm to your outdoor space but also allows you to customize it to your liking.
