DIY Outdoor Bench with Storage: Build Your Own
Transform your outdoor space into a functional and inviting oasis with a DIY outdoor bench featuring built-in storage. This practical addition not only provides a comfortable seating area but also keeps your garden tools, cushions, or other outdoor essentials organized and within reach. Let's dive into the world of woodworking and create a stylish, weather-resistant outdoor bench with storage that will elevate your backyard experience.
Before you grab your tool belt, consider the size, style, and material of your bench. A classic wooden bench offers timeless appeal, while a modern, weather-resistant composite bench requires minimal maintenance. Choose a design that complements your outdoor space and accommodates your storage needs. For this guide, we'll focus on a simple, sturdy, and stylish wooden outdoor bench with storage, perfect for both novice and experienced DIY enthusiasts.
Gather Materials and Tools
Assemble the necessary materials and tools to bring your project to life. A well-stocked workshop will make the building process smoother and more enjoyable.
Materials:
- 2x4 pressure-treated lumber (for the frame and legs)
- 2x6 pressure-treated lumber (for the seat and backrest)
- 1x6 pressure-treated lumber (for the slats and storage box sides)
- 1/2" and 3/4" exterior-grade plywood (for the storage box bottom and back)
- 2 1/2" and 2" exterior wood screws
- Wood glue
- Exterior paint or stain (optional)
Tools:
- Circular saw
- Drill and driver bits
- Tape measure
- Speed square
- Clamps
- Safety glasses
- Work gloves
- Ear protection
Design and Measure
Determine the dimensions of your bench, considering the available space and your storage needs. For this project, we'll create a bench that's 60" wide, 18" deep, and 18" tall, with a storage box that's 12" deep, 16" wide, and 10" tall.
Sketch a simple plan or use online design tools to visualize your bench. Once you're satisfied with the dimensions, measure and mark the cuts for each component. Keep in mind that pressure-treated lumber comes in 8' and 10' lengths, so plan your cuts accordingly to minimize waste.
Cut the Components
Using a circular saw and a straight edge, cut the lumber pieces according to your measurements. Be sure to wear safety glasses and follow proper cutting techniques to prevent injuries.
You'll need the following cuts:
- Legs: 4 pieces at 18" long from 2x4 lumber
- Support beams: 2 pieces at 16" long and 2 pieces at 58" long from 2x4 lumber
- Seat slats: 4 pieces at 58" long and 2 pieces at 16" long from 2x6 lumber
- Backrest slats: 3 pieces at 58" long and 2 pieces at 14" long from 1x6 lumber
- Storage box sides: 2 pieces at 16" wide and 12" tall, and 2 pieces at 10" wide and 12" tall from 1x6 lumber
- Storage box bottom and back: 1 piece at 16" wide and 12" deep from 1/2" plywood, and 1 piece at 16" wide and 10" tall from 3/4" plywood
Assemble the Frame
Begin by attaching the legs to the support beams using 2 1/2" exterior wood screws. Apply wood glue to the joints for added strength. Assemble the frame as follows:
1. Attach the two 16" support beams to the inside faces of the legs, 3" from the top, creating the back legs of the bench.
2. Attach the two 58" support beams to the outside faces of the legs, 3" from the bottom, creating the front legs of the bench.
3. Secure the frame by attaching the remaining two 16" support beams between the back legs, 3" from the bottom, creating the aprons of the bench.
Add the Seat and Backrest
Attach the seat slats to the frame using 2" exterior wood screws. Space the slats evenly, leaving a 1/2" gap between each for drainage and airflow.
1. Start by attaching the two 16" seat slats to the top of the aprons and the back legs.
2. Attach the remaining four 58" seat slats, spacing them evenly between the 16" slats.
3. To create the backrest, attach the three 58" backrest slats to the back legs and the two 14" backrest slats to the top of the back legs, spacing them evenly.
Build the Storage Box
Assemble the storage box using 1 1/2" exterior wood screws and wood glue. Attach the sides, bottom, and back as follows:
1. Attach the two 16" wide storage box sides to the 16" wide storage box bottom, creating a U-shaped assembly.
2. Attach the two 10" wide storage box sides to the open ends of the U-shaped assembly.
3. Attach the 16" wide storage box back to the open end of the storage box, creating a complete enclosure.
Attach the Storage Box to the Bench
Secure the storage box to the bench frame using 2 1/2" exterior wood screws. Center the storage box on the bench, with the open end facing the back of the bench.
1. Attach the storage box sides to the back legs of the bench.
2. Attach the storage box back to the backrest slats.
Finishing Touches
Apply exterior paint or stain to protect your bench from the elements and enhance its appearance. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before using the bench.
Consider adding cushions or pillows to the seat and backrest for added comfort. You can also incorporate planters or built-in armrests to further customize your DIY outdoor bench with storage.
Enjoy your new outdoor bench and the organized, functional space it provides. Your DIY project not only adds value to your home but also creates a welcoming gathering spot for friends and family to enjoy. Happy building!
