Mother Teresa of Augustine: A Life of Devotion and Service

Mother Teresa of Augustine, born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, was a Roman Catholic nun who dedicated her life to serving the poor and destitute. She is revered worldwide for her humanitarian work and was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta by the Roman Catholic Church in 2016. Let’s delve into her life, works, and the impact she left on the world.

Born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire (now North Macedonia), Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was the youngest of three children. Her parents, Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu, were of Albanian descent and were deeply religious. Young Agnes was greatly influenced by her mother’s charitable works and her faith.

Early Life and Calling

At the age of 18, Agnes left home to join the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. She took the name Sister Mary Teresa after St. Therese of Lisieux and began her training as a teacher.

In 1931, she took her final vows as a nun while serving as a teacher at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta. It was here that she felt the call to serve the poorest and most marginalized people of the city. She wrote in her autobiography, “I was to leave the convent and help the poor by living among them. It was an order. To fail would have been to break the faith.”

The Missionaries of Charity

In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation dedicated to caring for “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society.” The order grew rapidly, with hundreds of sisters serving in over 130 countries around the world.

The Missionaries of Charity established homes for the dying, orphanages, and shelters for the homeless. They also provided education, medical care, and other forms of assistance to people in need. Mother Teresa’s work was recognized internationally, and she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Teachings and Legacy

Mother Teresa’s teachings emphasized love, compassion, and humility. She believed that “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Her work was guided by the belief that “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

Her legacy continues to inspire people worldwide. The Missionaries of Charity, now numbering over 5,000 sisters, continue her work. Her life and teachings have been immortalized in books, films, and countless tributes. She remains a symbol of hope and compassion for millions.

Challenges and Criticisms

Despite her widespread acclaim, Mother Teresa was not without her critics. Some accused her of being too political, of aligning herself too closely with right-wing causes. Others criticized her for not doing enough to alleviate the root causes of poverty and suffering.

There were also questions about her spiritual life. While she was widely revered for her humility and selflessness, some wondered how she could maintain her faith in the face of so much suffering. Mother Teresa herself struggled with doubts and spiritual darkness, a period she referred to as “the darkness” or “the tunnel.”

Impact on Healthcare and Social Work

Mother Teresa’s work had a profound impact on the fields of healthcare and social work. She demonstrated the power of compassion and direct service in improving the lives of the most vulnerable. Her approach to care, which emphasized dignity, respect, and love, has been adopted by many organizations and institutions around the world.

Her influence can be seen in the development of hospice care, which focuses on providing comfort and support to people in the final stages of life. Her work also inspired a generation of social workers and activists dedicated to serving the poor and marginalized.

Today, Mother Teresa’s legacy continues to inspire and challenge us. Her life reminds us of the power of love and compassion in the face of suffering and injustice. As she herself said, “I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.”
