How to Transform Pants into a Skirt
Transforming a pair of pants into a skirt can be a fun and rewarding DIY project. Not only does it give you a unique piece of clothing, but it also helps reduce textile waste. Here's a step-by-step guide to turn your old pants into a stylish skirt.
Before you start, gather your materials. You'll need a pair of pants, scissors, a sewing machine, thread that matches your pants, a measuring tape, and a straight pin. Optional materials include a seam ripper, a fabric marker, and a tailor's chalk.
Preparation
First, try on the pants and decide where you want the waistband of your new skirt to sit. Mark this point with a pin or tailor's chalk. This will be the new hemline of your pants.
Next, remove the pants and lay them flat. Measure from the pin or chalk mark down to the bottom of the pants. This is the length you'll need to cut off to create your skirt. Make sure to account for seam allowances when measuring.
Cutting the Pants
Using your measurements, cut along the outer seam of the pants. Be sure to cut through both layers of fabric to avoid having to cut again.
If your pants have a zipper or buttons, you'll need to remove them. Use a seam ripper to carefully remove the stitching, then set the zipper or buttons aside for later use.
Hemming the Skirt
Now that your pants are the right length, it's time to create a new hem. Fold up the raw edge of the fabric to create a new hem. The width of your hem is up to you, but a standard width is about 1/2 inch.
Press the fold with an iron to crease the fabric, then pin the fold in place. Sew along the edge of the fold using a straight stitch. If you removed a zipper or buttons, reattach them now, positioning them on the new hemline.
Creating the Waistband
With the pants now a skirt, you'll need to create a waistband. You can use the existing waistband of the pants, or create a new one using the excess fabric from the legs.
If using the existing waistband, simply fold it over to create a double layer and sew it in place. If creating a new waistband, cut a strip of fabric that's about 3 inches wide and long enough to go around your waist. Fold it in half lengthwise, right sides facing in, and sew along the long edge.
Attaching the Waistband
Try on your skirt to determine where you want the waistband to sit. Mark this point with a pin or tailor's chalk. This will be the center front of your skirt.
Pin the waistband to the skirt, aligning the center front of both pieces. Make sure the right sides of the fabric are facing each other. Sew the waistband to the skirt using a straight stitch, leaving the side seams open.
Finishing the Skirt
Press the seam allowance of the waistband to reduce bulk. Then, fold the waistband over to the wrong side of the skirt and press again. Topstitch along the edge of the waistband to secure it in place.
Finally, try on your new skirt and admire your handiwork. You've just turned a pair of old pants into a stylish, unique skirt!
