Mastering Ottoman Slip Covers: Step-by-Step Sewing Guide
Transforming an old, worn-out ottoman into a stylish and comfortable seating option is easier than you think with a DIY slipcover. Not only does a slipcover update the look of your furniture, but it also protects the original fabric from everyday wear and tear. Let's dive into a step-by-step guide on how to sew a slipcover for your ottoman, perfect for both beginners and experienced sewers.
Before you start, gather your materials and tools. You'll need fabric (enough to cover your ottoman with a little extra for seam allowance), scissors or a rotary cutter, measuring tape, pins, a sewing machine, and thread that matches your fabric. For this guide, we'll assume you're using a standard-sized ottoman, but the process can be adapted for larger or smaller pieces.
Measuring and Cutting Your Fabric
Accurate measurements are key to a well-fitting slipcover. Start by measuring the width, length, and height of your ottoman. Add 2-3 inches to each measurement for seam allowance. Cut your fabric into the following pieces:
- Two pieces for the top and bottom, each measuring your ottoman's width plus seam allowance by its length plus seam allowance.
- Four pieces for the sides, each measuring your ottoman's length plus seam allowance by its height plus seam allowance.
Sewing the Sides
Begin by sewing two of the side pieces together, right sides facing in. Start at the top and sew along the height, leaving the bottom open. Repeat with the other two side pieces.
Press the seams open to prevent bulk. Now, you should have two long, open-ended rectangles that will become the sides of your slipcover.
Attaching the Top and Bottom
Place one of the side pieces right side up. Lay one of the top or bottom pieces on top, right sides facing in, aligning the edges. Sew along the width, leaving the other three sides open. Repeat with the other side piece and the remaining top or bottom piece.
You should now have two large, open-ended rectangles – one for the top and one for the bottom of your slipcover.
Creating the Boxed Corners
To create a neat, fitted look, we'll box the corners of the slipcover. Start by placing the top and bottom pieces right sides facing in, with the side pieces sandwiched between them. Align the edges and pin in place.
Sewing the Boxed Corners
Sew along the pinned edge, stopping at the corner. Leave the needle down and lift the presser foot. Fold the fabric upwards, creating a 45-degree angle at the corner. Sew across the corner, then fold the fabric downwards, creating another 45-degree angle. Sew across the corner again. Repeat this process on all four corners.
Press the seams open to prevent bulk. Your slipcover should now be taking shape, with boxed corners creating a neat, fitted look.
Finishing the Slipcover
Try your slipcover on the ottoman to ensure it fits well. If necessary, make any adjustments. To finish the slipcover, hem the bottom edges of the top and bottom pieces. Fold the raw edge under by 1/2 inch, then fold it under again by 1/2 inch. Sew along the edge to create a neat, finished hem.
Now, simply slip your ottoman into the slipcover, and enjoy your updated, stylish seating option!
Don't be afraid to get creative with your fabric choices and patterns. A slipcover is a fantastic way to add a personal touch to your home decor and make the most of your existing furniture. Happy sewing!
