How to Make a Bag from Jeans: Step-by-Step Guide
Transforming old jeans into a stylish and functional bag is an eco-friendly and creative way to upcycle fashion. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of making a simple yet chic bag from your favorite pair of worn-out jeans.
Before you begin, gather your materials: an old pair of jeans, scissors, a ruler, a fabric marker, a needle and thread that match your jeans, and a safety pin. You'll also need a large button or a piece of fabric for the bag's closure. Let's dive into the process.
Planning and Preparation
Start by deciding on the size and shape of your bag. For this guide, we'll create a simple drawstring bag. Measure and mark the size of your bag on the jeans using the fabric marker. Draw a rectangle that's slightly larger than the desired size of your bag, leaving enough room for the seams.
Cut out the rectangle from the jeans. This will be the main body of your bag. Next, cut two rectangles for the bag's handles. These should be long enough to go over your shoulder and wide enough to be comfortable to hold. Set the handles aside for now.
Creating the Bag's Body
Fold the main rectangle in half, with the right sides facing each other. Sew along the open edges, leaving the top open. This will be the bottom and sides of your bag. Turn the bag right side out through the opening at the top.
To create the drawstring casing, fold the top edge of the bag inward, creating a narrow tube. Sew along the edge, leaving an opening at the top to insert the drawstring. Once you've sewn the casing, insert a safety pin into the opening and use it to push the drawstring (a long piece of cord or ribbon) through the casing. Tie the ends of the drawstring together to secure it.
Adding the Handles
Take the two rectangles you cut for the handles. Fold each one in half lengthwise, with the right sides facing each other. Sew along the long edge, leaving the ends open. Turn the handles right side out and press them flat.
Position the handles on the outside of the bag, near the top. Sew them in place, making sure they're secure and evenly spaced. You can also add a large button or a piece of fabric with a loop to the front of the bag for an extra closure option.
Finishing Touches
Your bag is almost complete! To give it a more polished look, you can topstitch around the edges of the bag. This involves sewing along the seams from the right side of the fabric, creating a decorative line.
If you'd like to add a personal touch, you can embroider a design onto the bag or add a patch. You can also distress the bag further by rubbing it with sandpaper or using a fabric distressing tool to give it a worn, vintage look.
Washing and Softening
Once you're satisfied with the appearance of your bag, it's time to wash it. This will help to soften the fabric and give it a more lived-in feel. Wash the bag in cold water on a gentle cycle, then lay it flat to dry.
After washing, you can further soften the fabric by rubbing it with a bar of soap. This will help to break down the fibers and make the bag even softer. Once you're done, your bag is ready to use and show off!
Now that you've transformed an old pair of jeans into a stylish and functional bag, you can enjoy it guilt-free, knowing you've given new life to something that might have otherwise ended up in a landfill. Happy upcycling!
