How to Create a Custom Square Ottoman Cover
Transforming a square ottoman into a stylish and functional piece of furniture involves a bit of creativity and some simple DIY skills. A well-made cover not only enhances the aesthetics of your ottoman but also protects it from everyday wear and tear. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create a perfect cover for your square ottoman.
Before you start, gather your materials. You'll need fabric of your choice, scissors, measuring tape, a sewing machine, thread that matches your fabric, and a few safety pins or pins for holding your fabric in place. Optional materials include a foam padding for extra comfort and a zipper for easy removal and washing of the cover.
Measuring and Cutting the Fabric
Accurate measurement is the key to a well-fitting cover. Measure the length, width, and height of your ottoman and add an extra inch or two to each dimension for seam allowance.
Cut your fabric according to these measurements. If you're using foam padding, cut it to the same size as your ottoman, ensuring it fits snugly inside the cover.
Sewing the Cover
Sewing the Sides
Start by sewing the sides of your cover. Fold your fabric in half, right sides facing each other, and pin along the side edges. Sew along these edges, leaving the top and bottom open.
If you're using foam padding, insert it now through the open top or bottom. Once the foam is in place, fold the fabric over the top or bottom edge and pin it in place. Sew along this edge to secure the foam.
Sewing the Bottom
Fold the cover in half, right sides facing each other, and pin along the bottom edge. Sew along this edge, leaving the top open. This will be the bottom of your cover.
If you're not using foam padding, you can skip this step and simply fold the fabric over the bottom edge of your ottoman when you're finished.
Adding a Zipper (Optional)
A zipper makes it easy to remove and wash your cover. Measure and cut your zipper to the width of your ottoman's top edge. Sew the zipper onto the top edge of your cover, ensuring the zipper is on the inside of the cover.
Once the zipper is sewn on, fold the cover in half, right sides facing each other, and pin along the top edge. Sew along this edge, leaving the zipper open. This will be the top of your cover.
Finishing Touches
Turn your cover right side out and try it on your ottoman. Make any adjustments as necessary. If you're happy with the fit, you're ready to use your new cover!
For a professional finish, consider adding a few decorative touches. You could add piping around the edges, create a tufted look with buttons, or even embroider your initials onto the cover.
Enjoy your newly covered square ottoman! This DIY project not only adds a personal touch to your home but also demonstrates your creativity and skill. Happy crafting!
