Step-by-Step Guide: How to Install Garage Door Moulding
Installing garage door molding can significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of your garage door, while also providing a functional barrier against drafts and debris. This guide will walk you through the process, ensuring you achieve professional results.
Before you begin, gather your materials: garage door molding, miter saw, tape measure, pencil, level, construction adhesive, and finish nails. Also, ensure you're comfortable with basic woodworking tools and techniques.
Preparation and Measurement
Accurate measurement is crucial for a perfect fit. Start by measuring the width and height of your garage door opening.
For the header molding, measure the width of the opening and cut two pieces to this length. For the side moldings, measure the height of the opening and cut four pieces to this length. Remember to account for the 45-degree miter cuts at the top and bottom of the side moldings.
Cutting the Molding
Using a miter saw, cut the header moldings to the width of your garage door opening. Set your saw to a 45-degree angle for the miter cuts on the side moldings. Ensure your cuts are clean and precise for a seamless finish.
Always wear safety glasses when using power tools, and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for your specific miter saw.
Dry Fit and Adjustments
Before applying adhesive, perform a dry fit of your molding. Place the header molding across the top of the garage door opening, ensuring it's level. Then, attach the side moldings, mitering them into the header at the top and the threshold at the bottom.
Make any necessary adjustments to your cuts. If a piece is too long, trim it slightly. If it's too short, you may need to recut the entire piece or add a small filler piece.
Installation
Once you're satisfied with the fit, it's time to install the molding permanently.
Start by applying construction adhesive along the back edge of the header molding. This will provide additional support and help prevent drafts. Then, using finish nails, attach the molding to the header of the garage door opening. Ensure it's level and centered.
Installing the Side Moldings
Apply construction adhesive along the back edge of the side moldings. Then, starting at the top, nail the first side molding into place, ensuring it's mitered correctly into the header. Use a level to ensure it's plumb (vertical).
Repeat this process for the second side molding, ensuring it's mitered correctly into the header and the threshold at the bottom. Use a level to ensure it's plumb and that the gap between the two side moldings is even.
Step back and admire your handiwork. Your garage door should now have a clean, finished look, with a functional barrier against drafts and debris. Regularly inspect your molding for any signs of wear or damage, and touch up as needed to maintain its appearance.
