Step-by-Step Guide: Build a Compact Cabinet with Drawers

Transforming a small space into an organized haven is an art, and building a small cabinet with drawers is a masterstroke in this craft. Planning and Design

Start by deciding on the dimensions of your cabinet. For a small space, consider a cabinet that's around 36 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 30 inches tall. Sketch out your design, including the number and size of drawers. Our design will feature three drawers, each 12 inches wide and 9 inches tall.

Once you have your design, create a cut list. You'll need two side panels (1x12 boards at 30 inches), a top and bottom panel (1x12 boards at 36 inches), a back panel (1/4-inch plywood at 30x18 inches), and drawer parts (1x6 and 1x8 boards).

Cutting and Assembly

Using your cut list as a guide, cut all your pieces with a saw. Ensure you wear safety gear and follow proper cutting techniques. Once cut, sand any rough edges with medium-grit sandpaper.

Assemble the cabinet carcass by applying wood glue to the edges of the side panels and attaching the top, bottom, and back panels using a screwdriver or drill. Clamp the pieces together while the glue dries. After the glue is dry, reinforce the corners with additional screws.

Building the Drawers

To create the drawers, cut four pieces of 1x6 board at 11.5 inches for the drawer sides and four pieces of 1x8 board at 12 inches for the front and back. Assemble the drawers using wood glue and screws, ensuring the sides are perpendicular to the front and back.

Cut drawer faces from 1x12 board at 12x9 inches. Attach these to the front of each drawer using wood glue and screws. Finally, install drawer slides into the cabinet and drawers, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Finishing Touches

Now that your cabinet is functional, it's time to make it beautiful. Sand the entire piece with fine-grit sandpaper, then apply your chosen finish. This could be paint, stain, or a clear sealant. Allow the finish to dry completely between coats.
