How to Build a Rectangle Fire Pit
Picture this: a crisp evening, the scent of pine in the air, and the warmth of a crackling fire enveloping you and your loved ones. A rectangle fire pit can transform your outdoor space into a cozy, inviting oasis. But how do you build one? Let's dive into a step-by-step guide to create your perfect rectangle fire pit.
Before we begin, consider the size and materials. A standard rectangle fire pit is about 36" x 24", but you can adjust this to fit your space. For materials, we'll use concrete pavers, gravel, and fire-resistant mortar. Let's get started!
Preparation and Base
Preparation is key to a successful build. First, choose a level, safe location for your fire pit. Clear the area of any debris and mark out the dimensions of your pit using stakes and string.
Next, dig out the area to a depth of about 6 inches. This will accommodate the gravel base and pavers. Ensure the base is level and compact the soil using a tamper.
Creating the Gravel Base
Start by laying down a layer of landscape fabric to prevent weeds from growing up into your fire pit. Then, pour a 2-inch layer of gravel over the fabric. Use a rake to spread the gravel evenly and create a smooth surface.
Gravel allows water to drain and provides a stable base for your pavers. Once the gravel is in place, use a level to ensure the surface is even. Now, you're ready for the pavers!
Laying the Pavers
Begin laying your pavers along one edge of the marked-out area. Use a trowel to spread a thin layer of fire-resistant mortar onto the back of each paver as you lay them. This will help bond the pavers together and create a stable structure.
Lay the pavers in a staggered pattern for added strength. Use a rubber mallet to tap down any pavers that aren't level with the others. Once the first layer is complete, you can start on the second layer, offsetting the joints by at least half the width of a paver.
Building the Walls
Now that the base is complete, it's time to build up the walls of your fire pit. Continue laying pavers, spreading mortar on the back of each one, and staggering the joints. Ensure each layer is level and the walls are square.
As you build up, you may need to use a chisel to cut pavers to fit around the corners. Remember to wear safety glasses when cutting pavers!
Creating the Firebox
Once your walls reach the desired height (around 12 inches), it's time to create the firebox. This is the inner chamber where the fire will burn. Use a trowel to remove any excess mortar from the inside of the walls.
Lay a layer of fire bricks or fire-rated concrete blocks on the bottom of the firebox. These will protect the base of your fire pit from the intense heat. Then, lay a layer of regular pavers on top, creating a 2-inch air gap between the fire bricks and the pavers.
Finishing Touches
With the firebox complete, lay a final layer of pavers around the top of the walls to create a ledge. This will provide a safe, stable surface for sitting or placing drinks. Allow the mortar to cure for at least 72 hours before using your fire pit.
Finally, add a layer of sand around the outside of your fire pit to help with drainage and create a neat, finished look.
There you have it! Your very own rectangle fire pit, ready to become the centerpiece of your outdoor space. Invite your friends and family, gather some firewood, and enjoy the warmth and ambiance of your new fire pit. Happy building!
