How to Build a Concrete Block Bench
Transforming your outdoor space into a welcoming haven often begins with creating a comfortable seating area. A concrete block bench, durable and low-maintenance, is an excellent choice for your garden, patio, or balcony. This guide will walk you through the process of building a concrete block bench, ensuring you have a sturdy, long-lasting addition to your outdoor space.
Before you start, ensure you have the right tools and materials. You'll need concrete blocks, gravel, sand, cement, water, a trowel, a shovel, a wheelbarrow, gloves, safety glasses, and a tape measure. Having a level and a rubber mallet on hand will also be helpful. Let's dive into the step-by-step process.
Preparation and Foundation
Choose a level spot for your bench. If your area is uneven, you may need to create a foundation using gravel and sand. Spread a layer of gravel about 2 inches deep, then cover it with a 1-inch layer of sand. This will provide a stable base for your bench.
Measure and mark the dimensions of your bench. A standard bench is about 6 feet long and 1.5 feet wide, but you can adjust these measurements to suit your space and needs.
Laying the First Course
Start by laying the first course of blocks along the length of your bench. Ensure the blocks are level and aligned with each other. Use a level to check and adjust as needed. You can tap the blocks with a rubber mallet to level them if necessary.
For the second course, stagger the blocks so they don't align with the ones below. This will make your bench stronger and more stable. Continue laying courses, staggering the blocks, until you reach your desired height. A typical bench height is around 18 inches, which is about three courses of standard concrete blocks.
Creating the Seat
Once you've reached your desired height, it's time to create the seat. You can do this by laying a course of blocks across the top of your bench, perpendicular to the length. Ensure these blocks are level and well-supported.
For added comfort, you can fill the space between the seat blocks with sand or gravel. This will create a more cushioned surface. Alternatively, you could add a wooden seat or a cushion on top of the blocks.
Finishing Touches
Now that your bench is built, it's time to give it a finished look. You can do this by applying a layer of cement mortar over the top and sides of the bench. This will give it a smooth, uniform appearance and protect the blocks from the elements.
To apply the mortar, mix cement, sand, and water in a wheelbarrow until you have a smooth, spreadable consistency. Use a trowel to spread the mortar over the top and sides of your bench. Smooth it out as much as possible, and use a damp sponge to wipe away any excess.
Curing and Maintenance
After applying the mortar, allow your bench to cure for at least 72 hours. This will give the cement time to set properly. During this time, keep the bench moist to prevent the cement from drying out too quickly.
Once your bench is cured, it's ready for use. To maintain its longevity, sweep off any dirt or debris regularly, and reapply a layer of mortar every few years to keep it looking its best.
Building a concrete block bench is a rewarding project that adds both functionality and charm to your outdoor space. With a little time and effort, you'll have a durable, attractive seating area that you can enjoy for years to come. Happy building!
