Embracing the silver lining: a comprehensive guide to hairdressers' grey coverage.
In the realm of hair care, grey coverage has evolved from a mere necessity to an art form. Hairdressers worldwide have mastered the craft of transforming grey hair into a statement of sophistication and confidence. Let's delve into the world of grey coverage, exploring techniques, products, and expert tips to help you embrace your silver locks.
Understanding Grey Hair
Before we dive into coverage techniques, it's crucial to understand the science behind grey hair. Grey hair occurs due to a lack of melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. This natural process begins as early as our 30s, with the rate of greying varying from person to person.

Contrary to popular belief, grey hair isn't just white; it has a mix of pigments, including yellow, red, and orange. These undertones can affect how grey hair responds to color treatments, making personalized care essential.
Assessing Your Grey Hair
Before opting for grey coverage, assess your grey hair's condition and percentage of coverage. Hairdressers typically categorize grey hair into four stages: 1-25%, 26-50%, 51-75%, and 76-100%. The higher the percentage, the more challenging it may be to achieve full coverage.

Also, consider your grey hair's texture and porosity. Coarse, curly, or textured hair may require different techniques and products than fine, straight hair. Similarly, high-porosity hair, which is more prone to damage, needs gentler, moisturizing treatments.
Choosing the Right Grey Coverage Technique
Hairdressers employ various techniques to cover grey hair, each with its pros and cons. The most common methods are semi-permanent color, permanent color, and root touch-ups.

Semi-permanent color provides natural-looking coverage that lasts up to 24 washes, making it an ideal choice for those who want to experiment with color or have minimal grey hair. Permanent color, on the other hand, offers long-lasting results but requires more maintenance and can cause more damage. Root touch-ups are perfect for those with a higher percentage of grey hair, focusing on covering the roots while allowing the rest of the hair to grow out naturally.

Mastering Grey Coverage at Home
While professional help ensures the best results, many opt to cover their grey hair at home. With the right products and techniques, achieving salon-like results is possible.
When selecting a home coloring kit, choose one specifically designed for grey coverage. These kits contain higher concentrations of color and often include a conditioning treatment to minimize damage.

Preparing Your Hair
Before applying color, prepare your hair by washing it 24-48 hours prior. This allows your scalp's natural oils to protect it during the coloring process. Additionally, perform a strand test to check for any adverse reactions and to determine the exact development time needed.

There’s a reason for this- When using a permanent colour for full grey coverage- the peroxide used will shift your natural colour a little bit. Whenever we lift the hair- it will ALWAYS go warm (this happens to everyone)- so as long as you are using a permanent colour, this will always happen, and you will always have that brassy colour through the ends of the hair (unless it’s lifted out with bleach) So what’s the alternative? If you are open to having a middle ground (on a poll on my Instagram stories this week, 95% were), and would prefer to have your greys blended, you can try a demi-permanent colour instead. It does not use the same developer, so it does not lift the hair, so it won’t go brassy. Not only does this give a beautiful, natural and shiny coverage (goodbye Lego- hair), but as long as it’s mixed up to the same natural base as your natural, and on the ashy side, it will grow out seamlessly without a line. Grey blending is nuanced, so the specific technique will be different for everyone- however, this is one thing easy thing to replace that will change your hair drastically. When applying the color, follow the instructions carefully, ensuring even coverage. Use a comb or brush to distribute the color evenly, and wear gloves to protect your hands. After the recommended development time, rinse thoroughly and apply the included conditioner to moisturize and seal the cuticle.
Caring for Grey Hair
Regardless of the coverage technique used, maintaining the health and vibrancy of grey hair is crucial. Incorporate moisturizing shampoos and conditioners into your hair care routine to keep grey hair soft and manageable. Opt for color-safe and sulfate-free products to prolong the life of your color and minimize brassiness.

Regular trims help maintain the health of your hair and prevent split ends. Additionally, protect your hair from heat and environmental damage by using heat protectant sprays and limiting sun exposure.
