Embarking on the thrilling journey of EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander) deck building? You're in for a treat! EDH, also known as Commander, is a highly engaging and strategic format in Magic: The Gathering. But with great power comes great responsibility, and that's where understanding the rules comes in. Let's dive into the world of EDH deck building, exploring the key rules and best practices that will help you craft a formidable and enjoyable deck.

EDH is all about the commander, a legendary creature that serves as the linchpin of your deck. This format encourages unique strategies, big plays, and social interaction. But before you start slinging spells, let's ensure your deck is built according to the official rules.

Deck Construction Rules

The foundation of EDH is your 100-card deck. Here's where we start:

Your deck must contain exactly 100 cards. No more, no less. This includes your commander, who is not part of the 100-card requirement.

Commander Rules

Your commander is the heart of your deck. Here's what you need to know:

Your commander must be a legendary creature. This means it has the legendary supertype and can't be a planeswalker or an artifact.

Your deck must contain exactly 99 cards in addition to your commander. This means your deck is 100 cards in total, not including basic lands.

Card Restrictions

You may only have one copy of any card in your deck, with a few exceptions. These include basic lands, cards with a basic land type (like Snow-Covered Island), and cards with the Partner ability.

Your deck must not contain more than 10 cards with the same name, including your commander. This means you can't have more than 10 Lightning Bolts, for example.

Choose a commander that reflects your playstyle. Do you prefer aggressive strategies, control, or something in between? Your commander should guide your deck's direction.

Synergistic Cards

Focus on cards that work well with your commander. This could be equipment, enchantments, or even other creatures that complement your commander's abilities.

AD

Look for cards that enable your commander's abilities or provide additional value. For example, if your commander has a powerful enters-the-battlefield effect, include cards that let you play it multiple times.

Card Advantage and Interaction

EDH is a long game, so card advantage is crucial. Include cards that draw you more cards, like Fact or Fiction or Harmonize.

Don't forget interaction! You'll need ways to disrupt your opponents' plans. This could be removal spells, counterspells, or even politics-based interaction, like stealing your opponents' creatures with theft effects.

Remember, the most important rule in EDH is to have fun! Experiment with different strategies, playtest your deck, and don't be afraid to make changes. The beauty of EDH is its diversity and adaptability. So, grab your cards, find some friends, and let the good times roll!
