1. PVC pipes (schedule 40, ¾" or 1" diameter)
2. PVC pipe connectors (elbows, tees, and end caps)
3. PVC cement and primer
4. Hacksaw or PVC pipe cutter
5. Tape measure
6. Marker
7. Gloves and safety glasses
8. Optional: PVC pipe bender (for creating hoops)

Choosing the Right PVC Pipes

Selecting the appropriate PVC pipe size is crucial for the stability and longevity of your raised garden hoops. For most applications, a ¾" or 1" diameter pipe provides sufficient strength and durability. Schedule 40 PVC pipes are recommended for outdoor use due to their thicker walls and increased resistance to UV rays and extreme temperatures.

Consider the size and shape of your garden beds when determining the length of your PVC pipes. For rectangular or square beds, you'll need two lengths for the sides and two for the ends. For circular beds, you'll need four equal lengths to create a square that will be bent into a circular shape.

Assembling the PVC Frame

Once you have your materials, begin by cutting the PVC pipes to the desired lengths using a hacksaw or PVC pipe cutter. Measure and mark the pipes carefully to ensure accurate cuts.

Next, apply PVC primer to the ends of the pipes and the insides of the connectors. Allow the primer to dry for a few seconds, then apply PVC cement to both surfaces. Assemble the frame by connecting the pipes with the elbows, tees, and end caps, ensuring a tight fit. Allow the cement to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions before proceeding.

Installing and Using Your DIY Raised Garden Hoops

With your PVC frame complete, it's time to install your raised garden hoops and start enjoying their benefits. Follow these steps for a successful installation:

1. Position the frame over your garden bed, ensuring it's level and square.
2. If using a PVC pipe bender, create hoops by bending the pipes to the desired height and diameter. Alternatively, you can create hoops using wire or rope and attach them to the frame using zip ties or cable ties.
3. Secure the frame to the ground using stakes or concrete blocks to prevent it from shifting.
4. Install your plants or seeds according to their specific care instructions, ensuring they have enough space to grow and thrive.
5. Cover the hoops with garden fabric, row covers, or netting to protect your plants from pests and harsh weather.
6. Monitor your plants regularly, providing them with proper water, nutrients, and sunlight as needed.

The only tricky part is transporting the cattle panel from the store, but if you have access to a truck it is simple. You can form the arch in the bed of the truck and the cattle panel stays nice and snug. I was surprised how quick the install was! You really shouldn’t have any problems doing it in less than 30 minutes. I spaced my arch 5 feet apart but any distance 4-6 feet apart should work great. The standard width of cattle panel is 50 inches (just over 4 feet wide) but there are other panel types that are a bit skinnier if you don’t have that much space. #tinygarden #smallspacegardening #trellis | Real Farmer Jeff | Facebook
