DIY Jeans Purse Bag Tutorial
Transform your favorite pair of worn-out jeans into a stylish and functional purse bag with this DIY project. Upcycling your old jeans not only gives them a new life but also adds a unique touch to your accessories collection. Let's dive into this creative and eco-friendly venture.
Before you start, gather your materials: an old pair of jeans, scissors, a ruler, chalk or a fabric marker, a sewing machine with a denim needle, thread that matches your jeans, and any embellishments you'd like to add, such as rivets, buttons, or beads.
Designing Your Jeans Purse
First, decide on the size and shape of your purse. For a classic look, you can create a simple rectangular bag. Or, get creative with an asymmetrical design, a drawstring top, or even a crossbody bag.
Once you've settled on a design, use your ruler and chalk or fabric marker to mark out the pattern on your jeans. Remember to account for seam allowances, typically around 1/2 inch.
Cutting the Fabric
Carefully cut along your marked lines, ensuring straight and even cuts. You'll need two main pieces for the body of the bag and two smaller pieces for the handles or straps. If your design includes a lining, cut out additional pieces for that as well.
Don't forget to save any leftover fabric for potential embellishments or reinforcements. You can also use these scraps to make a matching phone pouch or key fob.
Sewing the Bag
Start by sewing the side seams of your bag. Place the two main pieces right sides together and sew along the marked lines, leaving the top open. If your bag has a lining, sew that separately first, then place it inside the outer bag, right sides together, and sew around the top edge.
Next, create the base of your bag. For a flat bottom, fold the bottom edge of the bag upwards, press, and sew. For a rounded bottom, mark and sew a curved line, then clip the corners and turn the bag right side out.
Adding Handles and Finishing Touches
Create your handles or straps by folding the handle pieces in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sewing along the long edge. Turn them right side out and press. Then, attach them to the bag using a topstitching stitch or by sewing them directly onto the bag.
Now it's time to add any embellishments. Rivets can add strength and style to the handles, while buttons or beads can decorate the front of the bag. Use a hammer and anvil to set the rivets, and a needle and thread to attach buttons or beads.
Personalizing Your Jeans Purse
To make your bag truly unique, consider adding a monogram, a patch, or even some embroidery. You can also distress the fabric further to give it an aged, vintage look.
Once you're satisfied with your bag's appearance, give it a final press to smooth out any wrinkles. Your DIY jeans purse is now ready to carry your essentials in style!
Don't be afraid to experiment with different designs and embellishments. Each upcycled jeans purse is a chance to express your creativity and personal style. Happy sewing!
