Can Double Sided Tape Support a Frame?

By Olivia Wilson
AD

Ever found yourself in a creative dilemma, wondering if double-sided tape can securely hold a picture frame? You're not alone. This versatile adhesive has become a staple in households and offices alike, but its strength and reliability can vary depending on the surface and the load. Let's delve into the capabilities of double-sided tape and explore whether it can indeed hold a frame.

Double-sided tape, also known as mounting tape, is designed to adhere to various surfaces, making it a popular choice for quick and easy fixes. However, its holding power isn't infinite. It's crucial to understand its limitations to ensure your frame stays put, especially if it's heavy or in a high-traffic area.

Understanding Double-Sided Tape Strength

Double-sided tape comes in different varieties, each with its own holding power. The strength is typically measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). For instance, a tape with 30 PSI can hold up to 30 pounds per square inch of surface area.

However, the actual weight it can hold depends on several factors, including the surface it's adhering to, the temperature, and the duration of use. For example, it may hold more on a smooth surface like glass than on a textured wall.

Types of Double-Sided Tape

Knowing the different types of double-sided tape can help you make an informed decision. Here are a few:

I've got two little picture hanging hacks. One, if you have a piece that you've thrifted and absolutely has nothing on it to hang with and then, the other one is how I would hang these on the wall. There's nothing to mount with and they have this little piece right here. So, let me show you. Check it out. So, these frames are not meant to be mounted on the wall. They're meant to be set on a table. This little piece right here can either be twisted around and popped off or you can just use some a little double-sided sticky tape to get it to stay down and then, I just took a little piece of rope that I had. You could use a trash bag tie or a little piece of picture wire hanger and most of these have this little tiny piece that holds that back piece of frame in place. All you have to do is just put a little piece around that and then you can hang it on the wall just like a regular picture. It's that simple. There are a ton of fun upcycles you can do is soda tap. So, I'm going to show you my little take on hanging pictures. I've seen some people do this where they just use glue but I'm going to show you a little trick. So, the way I've seen people do this little hack is they a tab just like this. They just bust it off and it's totally open on both sides. The way I do this hack is I actually leave this little tiny center piece, this little tiny center circle in place because then, I can put a little screw through it. Don't need to use glue at all and it actually looks better and holds much better. So, here is how you get your tab off while keeping this little tiny piece in place. You want to rotate your tab around instead of just yanking it off, you want to push on this top big hole just a smidge and once you get it kind of tucked down into the can, you want to pop it gently the other direction. So, basically, it popped off that little tiny circle and did not bust off. If you do it the normal way, it just bust the thing right off but this way, that little circle stays intact and can act as the perfect holder for a tiny, little screw. I really find that using a tiny little screw works way better than using glue 'cuz again, hot glue doesn't always hold and we want art to be safe on the wall and this keeps you from having to buy a whole kit from the hardware store. So, you can do this one of two ways. Once you've slightly bench your little cap and you've got your little circle still in place, you can either place one on either side of your frame and you can drill them into place and then, you could take a little picture wire or some wire from your house and go across so you've got your nice little picture wire hanging. Might be great if you have a heavier piece. Find that these tabs hold really nicely five to ten pounds but for this frame, it just has a vintage T-shirt that I framed in it. I'm just going to take one and place it right at the top. Measure evenly between the top of the frame so you get your cap, your little hook perfectly centered and then, all you have to do is take a tiny little screw and drill it right into place. Then, you have the perfect little hook mounted on the back of your picture frame and you didn't have to go out and buy a kit. So, when doing this little hack, opt out of the glue gun and just use a tiny screw, just flip it around and pop it off so you keep that circle in place and that's it. Honestly, it works better than any store mounting kit you can buy for the back of these pictures. So, again, you can do on either side or put one right in the middle. It just depends on if you want to use picture wire or not. Hang it on the wall and you're good to go. If I'm going to use these little soda tabs on the back of baskets or something woven. I still don't use glue. Obviously, you can't screw into a basket. I just use a little trash bag tie or a twist off of a cord that I've gotten and twist it right into place and that's it. It holds perfectly. Happy upcycling.

  • Removable Tape: Ideal for temporary use, it can be peeled off without leaving residue.
  • Permanent Tape: Designed for long-term use, it's tougher and more durable but can leave residue upon removal.
  • Archival Tape: Suitable for preserving artifacts or photographs, it's acid-free and won't damage the item over time.

Each type has its own holding power, so choose wisely based on your needs.

Factors Affecting Double-Sided Tape's Holding Power

Besides the type of tape, several other factors influence its holding power:

AD
  • Surface Texture: Smooth surfaces provide better adhesion than textured ones.
  • Temperature: Heat can weaken the adhesive, while cold can make it brittle.
  • Duration of Use: Over time, the adhesive can lose its stickiness.

Considering these factors can help you determine if double-sided tape is the right choice for your frame.

Holding a Frame with Double-Sided Tape

Now, let's address the elephant in the room. Can double-sided tape hold a frame? The short answer is: it depends.

For lightweight frames, especially those made of materials like foam board or lightweight plastic, double-sided tape can be a viable option. However, for heavier frames or those made of materials like wood or metal, it's not recommended. The weight and the material's surface area can exceed the tape's holding power, leading to the frame falling off.

  • Command Strips: These adhesive strips are designed to hold more weight and can be removed without leaving residue.
  • Nails or Screws: For heavier frames, consider using nails or screws. However, this method may leave holes in the wall.
  • Wall-Mounting Kits: These kits provide a secure hold and can be adjusted for leveling.

Each method has its pros and cons, so choose the one that best suits your needs.

Proper Application of Double-Sided Tape

If you decide to use double-sided tape, ensure you're using it correctly:

AD
  1. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove any dust or dirt.
  2. Apply the tape to the frame, pressing firmly to ensure a good bond.
  3. Position the frame on the wall, pressing it firmly in place.
  4. Allow the tape to set for the recommended time (usually 30 seconds to a few minutes) before applying too much pressure.

Following these steps can help maximize the tape's holding power.

In the end, the choice to use double-sided tape to hold a frame depends on various factors. While it can work for lightweight frames, it's essential to consider the alternatives for heavier ones. Always remember, the key to a successful application lies in understanding the tape's limitations and using it correctly.
