What is the First Prayer of the Rosary

The Rosary, a beloved Catholic prayer, is a series of meditations with prayers that follow a set pattern, often using a string of beads to keep track. The Rosary is typically prayed in sets of five, known as decades, with each decade consisting of ten Hail Marys and one Our Father. But what is the first prayer of the Rosary, and how does it set the tone for the rest?

Before delving into the first prayer, it’s essential to understand the structure of the Rosary. It begins with an introduction, followed by the five decades, and concludes with a closing prayer. Each decade is dedicated to one of the Joyful Mysteries, Luminous Mysteries, Sorrowful Mysteries, or Glorious Mysteries, which are events in the life of Jesus and Mary.

The Rosary’s Introduction

The Rosary begins with an introduction that sets the tone for the entire prayer. This introduction includes the Sign of the Cross, the Apostles’ Creed, the Our Father, three Hail Marys, and the Glory Be. These prayers establish the foundation of faith and devotion that permeates the entire Rosary.

The Sign of the Cross is a simple yet profound gesture that reminds us of our baptismal promises and our commitment to follow Christ. The Apostles’ Creed is a statement of faith, affirming our belief in God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Church. The Our Father, the model prayer Jesus taught his disciples, is a heartfelt expression of our relationship with God as Father. The three Hail Marys honor Mary, the Mother of God, and the Glory Be praises the Holy Trinity.

The Sign of the Cross

The Sign of the Cross is a simple yet profound gesture that reminds us of our baptismal promises and our commitment to follow Christ. It is a physical act of faith, tracing the shape of the cross on our bodies, often accompanied by the words, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

This prayer is a reminder of the central event of Christianity, the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a statement of our belief in the Triune God and our commitment to live according to His will.

The Apostles’ Creed

The Apostles’ Creed is a statement of faith that dates back to the early centuries of Christianity. It is called the Apostles’ Creed because it is based on the teachings of the apostles and reflects their understanding of the Christian faith. The creed affirms our belief in God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Church.

It is a concise summary of the core beliefs of Christianity, a profession of faith that unites Christians across denominations and centuries. Praying the Apostles’ Creed at the beginning of the Rosary is a reminder of the foundation of our faith and a commitment to live in accordance with it.

The First Decade: The Joyful Mysteries

The first decade of the Rosary is dedicated to the Joyful Mysteries, which celebrate the joyful events in the lives of Mary and Jesus. These mysteries are the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Presentation in the Temple, and the Finding of Jesus in the Temple.

The first prayer of the Rosary, the Our Father, is prayed at the beginning of each decade. This prayer is a model of how to pray, taught by Jesus himself in response to his disciples’ request, “Lord, teach us to pray.”

The Our Father

The Our Father, also known as the Lord’s Prayer, is a model of prayer that Jesus taught his disciples. It is a prayer of relationship, addressing God as “Father,” and a prayer of dependence, acknowledging our need for daily bread, forgiveness, and deliverance from evil.

Praying the Our Father at the beginning of each decade of the Rosary is a reminder of our relationship with God as Father and our dependence on Him for all our needs. It is a prayer of trust, entrusting ourselves and our world to the care of our heavenly Father.

In the Rosary, the Our Father is followed by ten Hail Marys, with each Hail Mary being a meditation on one of the twenty mysteries of the Rosary. The Rosary is a contemplative prayer, inviting us to enter into the mysteries of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, and to ponder them in our hearts, as Mary did.

Praying the Rosary is more than just reciting prayers; it is a journey of faith, a pilgrimage of the heart. The first prayer of the Rosary, the Our Father, sets the tone for this journey, inviting us to enter into the mysteries of Christ’s life and to live in the presence of God, our Father. As we conclude our prayer, we are invited to carry this presence and this love into the world, living as witnesses to the joy, light, sorrow, and glory of the mysteries we have contemplated.

How to Pray the Rosary: A Simple Guide

Michael - The Holy Rosary did not appear all at once as a finished “blueprint.” Rather, it grew from older Christian practices, especially the use of repeated vocal prayer counted on a cord or beads—and then, in the West, gradually took on the specific structure of decades and meditation on the mysteries associated with the Rosary as it is known today. What the Rosary is (and why that matters for its “origin”) In the Church’s understanding, the Rosary is not merely counting prayers; it is vocal prayer combined with meditation. Pope Leo XIII explains that, by praying the Rosary—either vocally or “better still” by contemplating the mysteries- one is brought close to Mary and led to “watch the mysteries of our Redemption” as though they were unfolding. Likewise, Pope Paul VI describes the Rosary as a renewed, Gospel-centered practice that fosters “contemplative prayer—prayer of both praise and petition.” A deeper “ancestor”: prayer counted by beads/knots Before the medieval Western Rosary, Christians (including monks) already used strings with knots or beads to count repeated prayers at regular intervals. This is attested in both Eastern and Western Christian history. The Catholic Encyclopedia notes that this custom seems to have originated among early monks and hermits, who used knotted cords for counting shorter prayers, and that the practice continues in the Eastern Churches under different names (e.g., kombologion, komboschoinion, vervitza). So, one key “origin” of the Rosary is: the Church adopted and purified a widespread human aid to prayer (counting), turning it toward meditation on Christ. Western development before the “Dominican Rosary” In the West, the use of objects to help count repeated prayers was also widespread before the thirteenth century. Alban Butler’s account (drawing on historical scholarship) explains that in the Middle Ages such items were called “paternosters,” and were used mainly to count “Paters” (Our Fathers). This matters because it shows that the Rosary’s later form involved development, not instant invention: the Church already had repeated prayer, and already had counting devices; what was added over time was the pattern of decades with meditation on the mysteries of Christ and Mary. The tradition: St. Dominic and Our Lady A well-known Catholic tradition - reflected in the Roman Breviary and repeated in papal teaching - links the Rosary’s popularization and its present form with St. Dominic, especially as a spiritual “antidote” to heresy. The Catholic Encyclopedia states that the Roman Breviary teaches that when the Albigensian heresy devastated Toulouse, St. Dominic sought help of Our Lady and was instructed to preach the Rosary; from then it was “most wonderfully published abroad and developed” by St. Dominic, and later popes spoke of him as the “institutor and author” of the devotion. This tradition is also reflected in devotional and papal explanations of the Rosary’s Marian and Christocentric character: Pope Leo XIII says that “the very origin of the Rosary makes that plain,” and he connects the Rosary’s practice to being brought “face to face” with the marvel of salvation through contemplating Christ’s mysteries. A note about historical discussion The same Catholic Encyclopedia also admits that the historical origins of the devotion are a “controverted question,” with serious debate about what can be asserted with certainty versus what is more legendary or symbolic. So, in Catholic terms: the tradition about St. Dominic is strongly present in Church life and papal recognition, while historians continue to discuss how the Rosary’s exact development unfolded. The Rosary’s structure: Gospel meditation in “decades” As the tradition matured, the Rosary became a specific way of praying: the faithful meditate on the principal mysteries of Christ’s life (and of Mary) while reciting vocal prayers. Butler summarizes this as the Rosary being “an epitome of the gospel,” teaching believers to honor Christ by meditating on those mysteries. Pope Paul VI likewise emphasizes that the Rosary draws explicitly from the Gospel: the sequence of Hail Marys leads into the major Gospel mystery of the Incarnation, especially as contemplated in the Annunciation. Later development: the addition of the Luminous Mysteries The Rosary’s “origin story” also includes later expansion of its mystery-cycle. The Catechism of the Ukrainian Catholic Church states that Pope John Paul II added five Luminous Mysteries to the traditional fifteen. A related “origin”: the Church calendar and major feasts While not the origin of the prayers themselves, the Church’s liturgical recognition reflects how strongly the Rosary entered public Catholic life. The Catholic Encyclopedia’s article on the Feast of the Holy Rosary describes how Pope St. Pius V ordered a commemoration of the Rosary after Lepanto, and later popes extended the feast and recognized it broadly in the Church. In short: the Rosary emerged from ancient counted prayer, was shaped in the West into a meditative Gospel devotion, and received a powerful Marian-Catholic identity through the St. Dominic tradition, even as historians discuss details of how the development occurred. | Facebook
