The Rosary of Liberation, also known as the Divine Mercy Chaplet, is a powerful prayer that combines the traditional Rosary with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. It’s a beautiful way to invoke the mercy of God and seek liberation from spiritual bondage. If you’re new to this devotion or want to deepen your understanding, this guide will walk you through how to say the Rosary of Liberation.
Before we dive into the steps, let’s briefly understand the significance of the Rosary of Liberation. This prayer is deeply rooted in the messages of St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun who received visions of Jesus in the 1930s. Jesus asked her to spread the devotion to His Divine Mercy, which includes the Rosary of Liberation. This prayer is believed to bring about physical and spiritual healing, as well as liberation from sin and suffering.
Preparing to Pray the Rosary of Liberation
To begin, you’ll need a Rosary with five decades (beads) and a crucifix. You’ll also need a Rosary of Liberation pamphlet or a printout of the prayer, as the traditional Rosary prayers are slightly modified.
Find a quiet place to pray, either alone or with others. You can pray the Rosary of Liberation at any time, but it’s particularly powerful when said at 3 PM, the hour of Jesus’ death on the cross. Remember, the most important thing is to approach this prayer with an open heart and a sincere desire to encounter God’s mercy.
Setting Up Your Rosary
Start by holding the crucifix in your hand. This represents the center of the Rosary, Jesus Christ, from whom all graces flow. As you hold the crucifix, make the Sign of the Cross and recite the Apostles’ Creed.
Next, move to the first bead of the first decade. This bead represents the Our Father. Recite the Our Father prayer, followed by three Hail Marys on the next three beads. These represent the three virtues of faith, hope, and charity.
Praying the Rosary of Liberation Decades
Unlike the traditional Rosary, the Rosary of Liberation includes a specific intention for each decade. These intentions are based on the Luminous Mysteries, which focus on the public life of Jesus. Here are the intentions for each decade:
- First Decade: Trust in God’s mercy
- Second Decade: For the conversion of sinners
- Third Decade: For the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church and the world
- Fourth Decade: For the needs of the Holy Father
- Fifth Decade: For the faithful departed
After each decade, pray the following prayer, which is specific to the Rosary of Liberation:
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy
After completing the five decades, you’ll conclude the Rosary of Liberation with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. This consists of five decades of the Our Father and the Hail Mary, with a specific intention for each decade. The intentions are:
- First Decade: For the whole world
- Second Decade: For the Holy Father
- Third Decade: For sinners
- Fourth Decade: For the dying
- Fifth Decade: For the souls in Purgatory
After each decade, pray the following prayer, which is the heart of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy:
Jesus, I trust in You.
Concluding the Rosary of Liberation
After completing the five decades of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, pray the following prayer to conclude the Rosary of Liberation:
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
Close with the Sign of the Cross.
As you finish the Rosary of Liberation, take a moment to reflect on the mercy of God. This prayer is not just about saying words, but about encountering the love and mercy of God. As you continue to pray this devotion, allow the grace of God’s mercy to transform your heart and bring about liberation in your life and the lives of those around you.
