Transforming your garden into a serene and inviting space often starts with creating a cozy seating area. A simple garden bench is not only a practical addition but also a stylish one. Building your own bench allows you to customize it to your garden’s aesthetic and ensures a perfect fit. So, let’s dive into a step-by-step guide on how to build a simple garden bench that will serve as a beautiful focal point and a comfortable retreat.
Before we begin, it’s crucial to gather the right materials and tools. You’ll need pressure-treated lumber for longevity, a saw, drill, screws, sandpaper, and outdoor wood glue. Safety gear, including gloves and safety glasses, is also a must. Now, let’s get started!

Design and Planning
First, decide on the size and style of your bench. A simple, classic design is both timeless and easy to build. For this guide, we’ll create a 6-foot long bench with a backrest, perfect for two people. Sketch a simple plan or use an online tool to help visualize your design.
Once you have your design, create a list of materials needed. For our 6-foot bench, you’ll need:
- 4 – 2×4 pressure-treated lumber boards (8 feet long)
- 2 – 2×6 pressure-treated lumber boards (8 feet long)
- 1 – 1×4 pressure-treated lumber board (8 feet long)
- 2.5 – 3 inch outdoor wood screws
- Outdoor wood glue
Cutting the Lumber
Using your saw, cut the lumber according to your design. You’ll need:
- 4 – 2x4s at 24 inches for the legs
- 2 – 2x6s at 60 inches for the seat supports
- 2 – 2x6s at 18 inches for the backrest supports
- 4 – 2x4s at 21 inches for the backrest slats
- 4 – 2x4s at 1.5 inches for the backrest spacers
Remember to wear safety gear while operating power tools.

Assembling the Bench Frame
Begin by attaching the seat supports to the legs. Apply wood glue to the ends of the 2×6 seat supports, then screw them onto the 2×4 legs, creating a rectangle. Ensure the legs are flush with the top of the seat supports.
Next, attach the backrest supports to the legs. Apply wood glue to the inside of the 2×6 backrest supports, then screw them onto the legs, about 18 inches from the top. Ensure they’re level and perpendicular to the seat supports.
Adding the Seat and Backrest
Now that the frame is complete, it’s time to add the seat and backrest slats. These will give your bench a finished look and provide comfort.

For the seat, cut the 1×4 board into 60-inch lengths and attach them to the seat supports using screws and wood glue. Space them evenly, about 1/2 inch apart, to allow for water drainage.
Installing the Backrest Slats
Cut the 21-inch 2x4s into 5-inch lengths for the backrest slats. Apply wood glue to the backrest supports and attach the slats, spacing them evenly with the 1.5-inch spacers in between. Ensure the slats are flush with the top of the backrest supports.
Once all the slats are attached, sand any rough edges, and your simple garden bench is complete!
Finishing Touches
To protect your bench from the elements and extend its lifespan, apply a coat of outdoor wood sealant. This will not only protect the wood but also enhance its natural beauty. Allow the sealant to dry completely before using your bench.

Now, place your new garden bench in your favorite spot, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Whether you’re reading a book, enjoying a cup of tea, or simply taking in the beauty of your garden, your handcrafted bench will provide the perfect retreat.
